Lil Durk has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a murder-for-hire scheme.
Multiple outlets reported that the rapper (real name Durk Devontay Banks) was booked on Thursday, October 24, in Broward County jail in South Florida. He is currently being held by the U.S. Marshals.
Durk’s attorneys told TMZ on Friday that the musician, 32, will have his first appearance that same day in federal court in Miami.
Us Weekly has reached out to Durk for comment.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Durk was accused of ordering the murder of rapper Quando Rondo. In 2022, Rondo and his cousin were shot at near the Beverly Center mall in Los Angeles. Three gunmen reportedly stepped out of a vehicle wearing ski masks while Rondo and his cousin were at a gas station. Rondo’s cousin died during the incident.
The FBI claimed that Durk put a bounty on Rondo after an associate of Rondo killed King Von, who was affiliated with Durk’s music group, Only the Family (OTF), which he founded in 2010. In November 2020, Von was fatally shot by Lul Timm during an altercation. (Timm was initially charged with murder, but the case was dismissed.)
Five members of OTF have also been arrested and charged in the plot, per the L.A. Times.
Durk is a rising star in the hip-hop world. In 2023, he got his start in the Chicago music scene when he dropped his Signed to the Streets mixtape series. His early success in the drill music genre led to him getting signed by Def Jam the following year. He released two studio albums under the label before parting ways in 2018.
Shortly after his exit from DefJam, Durk signed with Alamo Records and began to find commercial success. In April 2020, Durk made his debut on the Billboard charts with his track “Viral Hit.” He continued to drop new music and collaborate with other artists including Lil Baby, Drake and more. His albums, The Voice and 7220, were released in 2020 and 2022, respectively — and both records went platinum.
Earlier this year, he won his first Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance for his song “All My Life,” which features J. Cole.
“It feels good, it was a task [with] a lot of bumps in the road, but I think that’s for everybody,” Durk said to Billboard in February after winning his first award. “As long as you stay focused and get it together, you’re good.”
